Pope, Kelleher honored for work within the rice sector
The California Rice Industry Award is presented to an individual who has helped advance the rice sector. This year, two recipients received the award at the Rice Field Day held at the Rice Experiment Station in Biggs.
Rice breeder Lorenzo Pope of Rice Researchers Inc. in Ord Bend was the first recipient of the award at this year's field day. Pope recently retired after 39 years as a rice breeder. He was actively involved with the California Rice Commission during his career. The award was presented by Tim Kelleher, an agricultural attorney in Yuba City. Polly Okamoto of Rice Researchers Inc. accepted the award on Pope's behalf since he was unable to attend the field day.
Much to his surprise, Kelleher, who grew up on a rice farm in Biggs, also received the California Rice Industry Award. After receiving his law degree from UC Berkeley, he became an attorney specializing in agriculture. Kelleher concentrates on advising farmers on federal farm programs, farm business matters and estate planning. He recently served two terms on the Federal Crop Insurance Board of Directors. Retired farm advisor Jack Williams presented the award to Kelleher, who was accompanied by his wife and sister.
In 2000, a memorial fellowship was established to provide financial assistance to students pursuing careers in rice production science and technology as a tribute to D. Marlin Brandon, past director of the Rice Experiment Station. This year, the fellowship was presented to UC Davis doctoral student Matthew Espy, and UC Davis student Matthias Marcos, who is pursuing his master's degree. The men, both of whom have UCCE rice specialist Bruce Linquist as their major professor, will each receive a $2,500 scholarship.
