Longtime Farm Bureau leader Dick Hackett dies at 78

Richard "Dick" Hackett, a former California Farm Bureau Federation director and vice president, passed away Feb. 19 of natural causes. He was 78 and died at his Humboldt County home.

An active Farm Bureau member for more than 30 years, Hackett served briefly in 1989 as second vice president of CFBF after President Henry Voss was named to head the California Department of Food and Agriculture. He was a member of the CFBF board from 1985 through 1991.

"We value Dick's contributions to Farm Bureau and his outstanding service to California agriculture," said CFBF President Paul Wenger. "He dedicated his life to his family, his farm and his community and was a committed leader who gave his time and talents on behalf of agriculture statewide."

Hackett served as president of the California Wool Growers Association from 1992 to 1994 and worked on many special committees and projects related to ranching and timber issues. In addition, he served eight years on the Ferndale Union High School Board and was a long-time member of the Ferndale Rotary Club.

The Humboldt County Farm Bureau recently honored Hackett with its lifetime achievement award. Hackett led the Humboldt County Farm Bureau as president from 1981 to 1983.

Hackett was born in Ferndale and grew up on the family ranch on Howe Creek. After graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he worked for Pacific Lumber Co. before starting a career in real estate appraisal for Bank of America, specializing in agriculture and timber. In that role, he worked throughout Northern California, as well as on special assignments as a timber specialist throughout the Western states and Central America.

In 1970, Hackett and his wife LaVerne purchased the family ranch from his father and uncle and continued raising sheep and cattle. In 1984, his son Steve joined him in operating the ranch, which has been expanded to include adjoining and valley bottom land.

In 1991, the California Wool Growers Association named him California Sheepman of the Year, and he was selected by the Ingomar Club as 1997 Cattleman of the Year.

Hackett is survived by his wife and two children. The family suggests remembrances be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Ferndale, Hospice of Humboldt or to a charity of choice.

In addition, the Humboldt County Farm Bureau will be offering a scholarship in Hackett's memory. Donations may be mailed to Dick Hackett Scholarship; Humboldt County Farm Bureau; 5601 S. Broadway; Eureka, CA 95503.
