USDA opens organic nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for five-year terms on the National Organic Standards Board. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it will accept applications from qualified individuals until May 15.

USDA said the board consists of members from across the organic sector, and provides advice and recommendations to the secretary of agriculture on implementation of the Organic Foods Production Act.

Board member duties include attending committee meetings, participating in bimonthly subcommittee conference calls, reviewing materials and/or recommended changes to the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances, and advising USDA on other aspects of organic regulations. Travel to attend committee meetings is reimbursed by USDA.

Nominations are being accepted for four seats on the 15-member board: an individual with expertise in environmental protection and resource conservation; an organic producer who owns or operates an organic operation; an organic handler who owns or operates an organic handling operation; and a retailer with significant trade in organic products.

Additional criteria USDA said it will consider in evaluating nominees include practical experience in the organic community, demonstrated experience in development of public policy, and participation in standards development and/or involvement in educational outreach activities.

Written nominations, USDA said, should include a cover letter, resume and a required form, which is available on the USDA website. Information may be found at www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/NOSBNominationProcess.
