Dogs sniff for invading mussels

Mussel-sniffing dogs have been employed at New Melones Lake, as part of a campaign to keep the reservoir clear of invasive aquatic species.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which operates New Melones as part of the Central Valley Project, said it wants to prevent quagga or zebra mussels from reaching the lake on boats or other watercraft.

The bureau said the mussels can displace native species and "coat and clog everything in their path." Mussel infestations that clog pipes, for example, could complicate the bureau's work to manage the reservoir.

The specially trained dogs are being used to inspect boats, the bureau said, adding that reservoir staff will also train boat owners on how to inspect boats themselves to reduce invasions of aquatic species.
