Irrigating lettuce with drip has benefits, drawbacks

Central Coast lettuce growers aiming to save on labor by germinating with drip tape that remains buried a few inches below the surface the entire season may face the unintended consequence of having significant amounts of applied nitrogen that must be reported to water quality regulators even though it never reaches down to the root zone.
